To Station #4

This Page covers the ride from lunch (Station #3) up to and including the stop at Station #4.

I can’t say anything about this section of the ride, since I was now in the truck heading towards the final station, in San Diego.

  1. At mile 83 a spoke broke in my rear wheel. (Saint) Bob Spalding was riding with me and called the van to report the problem and found there were no spare wheels. John Aunedi arrived on his fixed gear bike (more about that later) and it was determined that the wheel would have to be removed to remove the broken spoke. When Sergio arrived we decided instead to cut off the spoke and loosen the rear brake so the wheel could move without interference. However, the wheel now had a rather comical wobble to it that made the remaining 30 miles (including the Torrey Pines hill) an adventure — not to mention not having rear brakes!
